Winter 2010 workshops
The Commission held four half-day and two full-day public workshops in Lethbridge, Calgary, Red Deer and Edmonton between January 21, 2010 and March 24, 2010. The workshops provided an overview of Alberta's human rights legislation with a focus on human rights in the workplace. Discussions centered around the duty to accommodate, preventing harassment in the workplace, and strategies for creating respectful and inclusive workplaces.
Thirty-one people participated in both of the workshops in Lethbridge and Red Deer, eighty-one in Edmonton and eighty-two in Calgary. The workshop in Lethbridge was held in partnership with the Coalition of Municipalities Against Racism and Discrimination, City of Lethbridge. A variety of organizations, including businesses, unions, and law enforcement and not-for-profit organizations, were represented at the workshops. These organizations were seeking information on how to create respectful and inclusive workplaces free from discrimination as our province becomes more diverse.
The response to these workshops has been very positive. The workshop evaluations show that the participants enjoyed the workshop and the information that was presented, and they are requesting more workshops be offered. Many of the participants have asked for a more detailed workshop on topics such as investigating complaints, and human rights and the employment process. The Commission will be scheduling more public workshops starting in September 2010.
Fall 2009 workshops
The Commission held full-day public workshops in Lethbridge, Edmonton, Calgary and Fort McMurray between September 23, 2009 and November 5, 2009. The workshops provided an overview of Alberta's human rights legislation with a focus on human rights in the workplace. Discussions centered around the duty to accommodate, preventing harassment in the workplace, and strategies for creating respectful and inclusive workplaces.
Twenty-five people participated in the workshop in Lethbridge, 50 in Edmonton, 55 in Calgary and 53 in Fort McMurray. The workshop in Edmonton was held in partnership with the Northern Alberta Alliance on Race Relations (NAARR), and the workshop in Fort McMurray was held in partnership with the Regional Municipality of Wood Buffalo. A variety of organizations, including businesses, unions, and law enforcement and not-for-profit organizations, were represented at the workshops. These organizations were seeking information on how to create respectful and inclusive workplaces free from discrimination as our province becomes more diverse.
The response to these workshops was very positive. The workshop evaluations show that the participants enjoyed the workshop and the information that was presented. Many of the participants have asked for a more detailed workshop on topics including how to investigate human rights complaints, drug and alcohol testing, duty to accommodate religious beliefs, and obtaining medical information in the workplace. The Commission will be scheduling more public workshops starting in January 2010.
Spring 2009 workshops
In May 2009, full-day public workshops entitled Human Rights in the Workplace: Creating Respectful and Inclusive Workplaces were held in Edmonton and Calgary. The workshops provided an overview of the Human Rights, Citizenship and Multiculturalism Act and discussed preventing harassment in the workplace and the duty to accommodate.
Forty individuals participated in the workshop in Edmonton and 57 in Calgary. The workshop in Calgary was held in partnership with Human Resources and Skills Development Canada. A variety of organizations, including small and large businesses, unions, and law enforcement and not-for-profit organizations, were represented at the workshops. These organizations were seeking information on how to create respectful workplaces free from discrimination.
The response to these workshops was very positive. The workshop evaluations show that the participants enjoyed the workshop and the information presented. Many participants requested a more detailed workshop on drug and alcohol testing, and the duty to accommodate religious beliefs and mental and physical disabilities. As a result, the Commission will be scheduling workshops on these topics in the future.
