International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

Since 1966, the 21st of March has been recognized by the United Nations (UN) as the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. March 21 was declared in honour of those who lost their lives in the Sharpeville, South Africa massacre in 1960, where during a peaceful protest, 69 anti-apartheid protesters died and over 300 were wounded.

Canada was one of the first countries to support the UN declaration and in 1989, the Government of Canada launched its annual March 21 Campaign. On this day, we are reminded of the millions of people worldwide who continue to experience racism and racial discrimination. We all have an important role to play in speaking out against racism and building a society where racial discrimination and intolerance are not accepted.

Albertans join communities across the world to commemorate International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
